Lot 343
()
U.S.; General Issues, 1857, 1¢ Blue, Type Ia, #19, unused, pos. 93L4, marginal copy, rich color, completely sound, showing all of the key characteristics at bottom (the most important), Fine to Very Fine for this most copies show perfs touching, PF copy (1974) for strip of 3, PSAG (2015) certs.
Scott $20,000. Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on plate 4. Although plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in perfs often cutting into design at either top or bottom. For this reason, stamps from bottom row of plate 4 with perforations clear of the design are especially desirable, since the characteristics of the type are complete (Type Ia) or nearly complete (Type Ic) at bottom, this copy is highly desirable since it shows all the type characteristics in the selvage and exceedingly rare both mint and sound .
Estimate $5,000-7,000.
