U.S.; General Issues, 1865 Carusi Patent Model Essay, submitted by Samuel Carusi, intended for an improved system of postage stamps that would prevent their reuse by writing the date in the upper half of the stamp, it would effectively be canceled, the lower half was reserved for any special instructions, if needed, Carusi proposed that each post office have its name printed at the top, the post office name and date supplied by the user would then eliminate the need for postmarking, a most unusual item, Fine to Very Fine, 1 of 7 known essays submitted with original application .
