U.S.; General Issues, 1847, 5¢ on Folded Letter to Arad, Hungary, #1, 3 margin copy tied to folded letter by manuscript "49" in blue and red grid cancel, addressed to Arad, Hungary (now Romania), faint New York May 26 cancel (in last 2 months of 1847 issue validity), sent via Prussian mails (red cancel on reverse) and Vienna (boxed cancel on reverse), fine. This cover was discovered in a family correspondence in 1997 and offered in our June 1998 auction where it realized $23,000 (incl. buyers premium), front page article from Linn's April 20th issue included. Only known 1847 issue cover to Romania, a key item for the collector of the 1847 issue .
