Lot 445		United States, James Buchanan Exhibit, Incoming Foreign Usages, Canada, Fredericton, N.B., 1842, Cross-Border, Aug. 10, routing from Fredericton, NB to St. Andrews, NB exchange to Robinson, ME exchange to Charleston, MA, double weight letter paid as Canadian postage 18 (9x2) + 1, one penny paid as 1¢ surcharge on U.S. letters to compensate for U.S. currency conversion, effective May 1842 to Dec. 1843, with cds from each town. Lot 447		United States, James Buchanan Exhibit, Incoming Foreign Usages, Cuba, Havana to Paris Via Savannah, Dec. 24, 1858 routed Havana, Savannah, New York, Liverpool, Paris, very scarce "Havana" marking applied at Savannah with cds, letter sent unpaid, New York debited France 16¢ for single rate, France considered letter two rates (ms. "8", 8 grams) and marked 24¢ Postage Due (2x12), arrived in Paris Jan. 15, 1859, some discoloration, nice example of this Savannah marking . Estimate $400-550. View details and photo	Realized $253
Lot 448		United States, James Buchanan Exhibit, Incoming Foreign Usages, Cuba, Matanzas, C. 1835, straightline "Matanzas" with red "Forwarded By/ Drake & Coit/Matanzas" in rounded corner rectangle, addressed to Nicholas Trist, controversial U.S. Consul in Cuba where he promoted the slave trade, Very Fine. Later served a negotiator for the U.S. to end the Mexican War. Estimate $80-100. View details and photo	Realized $81

Lot 451		United States, James Buchanan Exhibit, Incoming Foreign Usages, Nicaragua, 1857 Second Walker Invasion, postmarked Washington, D.C., December 17, 1857, addressed to "Flag officer H. Pauling, Home Squadron, Flag Ship Newark, San Juan de Nicaragua, via Aspinwall, or direct", correctly franked 34¢ with 1¢, 3¢, and 10¢ (strip of 3) 1857 adhesives, red 24 handstamp, the rate being a combination of the U.S. 10¢ steamship rate to a Caribbean port plus the British 24¢ packet rate between West Indies Offices, landed first at Kingston, where two-line Jamaica/Ship Letter was struck, indicating carriage by non-contract vessel to the British Packet Agency at St. Thomas, from where it was finally dispatched to San Juan del Norte on January 6, 1856, by this time Pauling had left San Juan, so the forwarding agent added in manuscript "Forwarded from San Juan del Norte by your Obt. Svt. W. Johnson Jr.", enclosed the letter in a separate envelope and sent it on to its final destination, probably New Orleans, where Pauling had taken Walker after his capture, stamps somewhat damaged by scissors separation, still Very Fine.
