U.S.; General Issue Covers, 1861, 3¢ Block of 4 on Unusual Union Patriotic, Weiss #M-A44, Tied by pen canceled, tied by indistinct c.d.s. and red "12", with m.s. "Fortress Monroe" (remained in Union hands throughout the Civil War) and "Exchange-Truce" to New Jersey, interesting m.s. "Sgt. Wm. Bell" (see below), additional m.s. "Letter of Truce", printed by Charlton & Althrop, small repaired tear at top, very unusual and interesting, Fine usage. Bell enlisted November 5, 1861, in Company K, One Hundred and First Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 101st Regiment, re-enlisted for three years. In April, 1864, he was captured at Plymouth, North Carolina, and for ten months confined in prison pen at Andersonville, then exchanged (this cover may be relevant to the exchange).
