U.S.: 1931, 2¢ Yorktown, Round the World Flight By Herndon & Pangborn, Earliest Known Usage, #703, 75 covers were carried on this record breaking flight which started at Floyd Bennet Field 28 July 1931, after flying from Russia to Japan the pilots were arrested jailed and fined by the Japanese Government for flying over Japanese fortifications, the 4500 mile flight from Japan to Wenatchee, WA was the 1st non-stop flight from Japan to the United States, on arrival in Wenatchee on 5 October the Yorktown stamp was applied and cancelled, cover is signed by both pilots, Hugh Herndon and Clyde Pangborn and is accompanied by two pictures of their plane "Miss. Vedol", a letter signed by Pangborn, and an advertising card for Herndon, Fine to Very Fine, this is the earliest legitimate use of the Yorktown stamp .
